"I must find the Amateria blade before it's too late..."

- Chaude Windchester

Chaude Winchester was the Knight-Captain of the Stormwind Paladin Brigade (SPB) during the Arathinian Expedition Campaign. After receiving a curse from a Death Lord, Chaude's days of living as a Human are numbered as he must find the Harmony blade of Purity, the Amateria blade, in order to remove his curse, or otherwise become an Undead himself. The only problem is what does the "Amateria" blade look like?

[edit] Appearance

Chaude has an average height with a non-authoritative stature when walking up to people. His hair is brown, grayish-blue eyes, and is moderately muscular in build. With a simple smile, he gains respect from his subordinates by what he can do for them, and lets his troops know that there are times when he has to be all authoritative with his title and other times when he's just like them, a friendly fellow with hopes, dreams, and fears.

He dons a golden armor set with a sword and shield. He also wears a redish-orange clock, a family heirloom passed down from one generation to the next, coming from nobility when Arathi was still a kingdom. In addition, he wears another family heirloom around his neck, though Chaude doesn't know how to use the power stored within the necklace.

In combat, Chaude prefers to stay on the defensive and use his shield a lot to learn the enemy's moves and then counters when he sees a pattern. Some people don't think highly of him for such tactics, as those people prefer an all-out strategy, but he doesn't mind that so much. After saving one of his subordinates from a pack of Ghouls, he got the nickname "Aegis" for taking on the those pack of twenty Ghouls and defeating all of them single-handedly.

[edit] Personality

During his military academy days, Chaude's carefree attitude had lead him into trouble with his instructors and some of his peers. It was his work ethic and some luck that had always got him through. When he became Knight-Captain of the SPB, the first thing he wanted to do was to not place fear in his subordinates, believing that his trust can be earned by respecting who they are and support their needs.

While his carefree attitude is a mix blessing, people say, he spends a lot of time reading tactic books and attends seminars in Stormwind on military tactics. Chaude hopes that being skilled in military strategy could not only win a victory for his kingdom, but more importantly he hopes that all of his troops are still alive, as too many fatalities means a lot of resurrecting. He and others can resurrect so many within the period of time possible before the fallen are gone completely.

When facing an Undead, Chaude builds up a lot of rage and kills any Undead he sees nearby. After the death of his little sister, when his family was fleeing from the horrors in Lordaeron, he vowed to finish his Paladin training and cleanse the world of all Undead. Though the reason is out of revenge by heart, he has to keep reminding himself that it is for the poor souls trapped within their own twisted bodies, and whom continue to suffer, as to remain in control of his emotions.

[edit] History

[edit] Childhood

Raised in a lower-nobility family, Chaude's family is a direct decedent of a higher nobility in the height of the Arathian kingdom. While his father was a merchant and a part-time doctor, his mother was an activist for peace and equality while passing down her family's noble heritage unto Chaude.

His mother would always take Chaude on vacation every year to see the different races in Azeroth, while telling him about the historical and social contexts the Dwarfs, Gnomes, and on a rare occasion, the now-a-day Blood Elves had dealt and live with. At the magical city of Silvermoon, Chaude would befriend Lilth Findorei (later Lilth Vinase). Every person from each race couldn't help but to amuse the young Chaude with their culture and genuine friendly faces.

One of Chaude's most painful memories that helped spark interest in becoming a Paladin, other than seeing Prince Arthas and Uther, and other noble Paladins, was the death of his dog, Mr. Wiggles. When little Chaude had fallen and scrapped his knee against the stone road, it was always Mr. Wiggles who came and wagged his tail and licked his wounds. This "boy and his dog" moment seemed to last for ages until Mr. Wiggles died from a horrible incident with a traveling hunter. The intoxicated hunter came out of the tavern from the old section of Stormwind, and fired a few arrows around the scene before being thrown into the stockades. Chaude had always heard that Paladins could resurrect the dead, but his parents had to explain to him that poor Mr. Wiggles was gone to long for any Paladin to come and resurrect him.

There were times when Chaude was much akin to his parents, as he would share his money with the less fortunate kids and play with them, but a part of him as he was growing up was longing for something more. He didn't want to toss away the cherished values his parents passed onto him, yet he wanted to achieved a greater privilege to realize peace and equality...by becoming a Paladin. Both of his parents were not pleased with their twelve year old's decision, but after many arguments and many more headaches, they finally gave consent and he enrolled into the academy to become a Paladin, the protector of the Light and Life, the Shield for the weak and the Sword against the strong.

[edit] Academy Days

In his teens, Chaude was enrolled at the Lordaeron Military Academy and was the top third in his class. His trainer and mentor, Gregory Lightbearer, broke him into shape on taking his lessons more seriously, while instilling a bond with Chaude. Looking up to his kind, yet strict mentor, Chaude developed a habit of reading into books, when he was fascinated with the art of defense that proved valuable from getting defeated so badly by Gregory during practice.

Though he has a carefree mind, his peers would try to ambush him and make their differences known. The bullying wouldn't last long when Chaude could defend himself, but also when a classmate of his, Abigail, stepped in and got the bullies to stop. From then on, the two were good friends and good sparring partners for fun and for their military dueling exams.

Near the end of his academy days, after transferring to the Stormwind Military Academy since the fall of Lordaeron, and months after the battle on Mount Hyjal, Chaude met a Night Elf for the first time. Once word from Silverpine reached to Stormwind about an unusual group of elves passing by, a small detachment nearby went to confirm the report. Upon discovering the honorable Tyrande Whisperwind and the impatient Maiev Shadowsong, a small meeting took place. An arrangement was struck between Tyrande and the representative of Stormwind to have one of their youth be exposed to Human culture and vis-versa. The Night Elf went by the name Roland, as the academy administrators had difficulties in pronouncing his native name properly. The two meet in the gymnasium. The other students ignored Roland, leaving him to have no one to talk to or spar with. Speaking in Human tongue was somewhat difficult for Roland at first. Chaude decided to talk to him and got him to spar, only to soon realize that Roland bested him twenty times in a row that afternoon. The two became good friends, and Roland had no issue in befriending Abigail as well. Roland would become the top student in their class.

[edit] The Massacre at the Arathian Wall

Years after the Undead takeover of Lordaeron, Chaude finished his academy training in Stormwind and soon after held a commanding position of "Knight-Captain" over a newly created military group called the Stormwind Paladin Brigade. He was recommended for the position by Gregory himself, while Gregory also recommended Abigail to be one of his officers. The other 3 officers, Roland was the first on Chaude's mind to ask, and 55 regular troops, Chaude had hand picked all of them from their applications and private demonstrations.

One night, a large group of Gargoyles entered into Stormwind, causing a lot of panic among the residents. The last surviving Gargoyle manged to speak the Human tongue and warned of the Lich King's wrath coming soon to all the Living and the Forsaken. A council meeting by the Elders in the military circle immediately went into session and soon agreed to dispatch the four newly organized brigades with Gregory leading the Expeditionary Force to the Arathi Basin and repair the long neglected wall, while fortifying it.

Arriving to the worn down wall, the four brigades, Stormwind Warrior/Hunter/Mage/Paladin Brigades helped with the repairs along with the peasants for two solid weeks. On the beginning night of the third week being there, the Scourge attacked the completed wall. The tired defenders had given their all, but many perished, including Gregory, to the onslaught of the multitude of zombies, ghouls, and a couple dozen Death Knights. Luck was on the defender's side when an elite army from Ironforge made it in time to save the survivors and stopped the invasion, though a Horde detachment soon followed.

Waking up from a two-week sleep, Chaude finds out that he is suspended for a year from his leadership role, on grounds of insubordination during the besiege at the Arathian wall, while the rest of his family had died in a terrible fire, leaving him copperless. A sensation haunts Chaude, however, since he stared into the eyes of the Death Lord, his body felt somewhat...Undead. From what Chaude had deciphered from an old Arathian tome beneath the wall, he has a short amount of time, two years for the unfortunate person in the tome, before he becomes an Undead himself. Chaude didn't want to believe it, but the ghost of the writer who wrote those passages proved otherwise.

[edit] Present

Chaude and His Haunting Past

Chaude is searching for his cure to purify himself of his curse. According to the tome, he must find the Amateria blade, before he turns into an Undead. He's only told about his condition to Abigail, who's transferring to Theramore to avoid harassment by her new peers and superiors, and he intents to not tell his guild he recently joined if at all possible. The guild is but a very small one, only enough to make a party out of it really, as the guild travels around the world to fulfill each guild member's personal quests.

One year has passed since Chaude has set out to find the Amateria blade. Beneath his right gauntlet, Chaude's bare hand has transformed into a mushy flesh, bony hand of an Undead, while both knee caps are losing cartilage and becoming the bare bone of an Undead. Lately, he's been eating less, and he has asked to be night watch consecutively for the last three months without showing signs of being fatigued during the day. He's managed to hide his aliment from his guildmates, but he realizes that the day is coming soon when he'll have no choice but to expose his burden of truth to them.

Having already explored much of the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor, and even exploring in the Post-Illidan era of Outlands, one last thought comes to Chaude's mind. The sleeping blade, Amateria, where it is said to be surrounded by pure light, could mean only one place possible for a mortal to travel to now...Northrend. Perhaps the blade of purity is in a cave of clear ice, surrounded by shimmering crystals, he ponders as of late. To Chaude, there is only one way to find out though...
